MLS Protest Plane
This is the story of how I organized, funded, and procured a protest plane to fly over the stadium of a soccer team that everyone — even their own fans — wanted gone.

Before MLS had LAFC,
they had Chivas USA
They were easily the worst team in the league for a decade, and their matches were empty. What fans did show up only did so to boo.
To say the team and its owner were a disappointment would be an understatement.

Upon listening to the fans, the ownership in their infinite wisdom decided on the following:
Signs critical of the ownership would be banned in the stadium
But as someone joked, they never said anything about ABOVE the stadium.
Working with r/MLS, I raised $715 over their stadium during a nationally-televised game.
Since Chivas USA had a Hispanic identity, I decided on the Spanish term for “Vergara Out!”
FUERA VERGARA
FUERA VERGARA
And that led to this blurry video of our protest plane flying over the stadium.
I was on the other side of the country, and I really wish it hadn’t been shot on a potato, but hey.
But it definitely got noticed. Correspondents for the major sports outlets — the Associated Press, ESPN, and Fox Sports — all tweeted about it.
The fans were grateful too. Remember how I said they hated the ownership too?
You could feel the love they had for me.

And eight months later, MLS decided that they had had enough. They bought the team themselves and then sold it to new owners. It’s now known as LAFC.

Obviously I wasn’t the only reason Chivas USA went under, but I was happy to do my part.

LAFC by the way is consistently one of the best teams in the league. They’re in first place as I write this.
